About Zetea

In the Târnava Mare valley, on the western side of the Harghita Mountains

Zetea is located 12 km from Odorheiu Secuiesc, on county road 138. It stretches along the narrow valley at an altitude of 550-575 m.

The administrative division of Zetea includes five settlements:

 

- Sub Cetate

- Șicasău

- Izvoare

- Deșag

- Poiana Târnavei.

 

These villages, with the increase in population, from small hamlets ended up forming one of the largest communities in Harghita county.

It is one of the most populous region in Hargita county. It is mentioned for the first time in the Papal Tithe list in 1333. In his description of Szeklerland, Balázs Orbán writes: "Zetelaka is such an old settlement that it was mentioned in the Csíki chronicles even before Saint Stephen."

 

According to tradition, the village was originally called Cseleháza. The former village was destroyed by the Tatars, but the villagers escaped with the help of a trick, therefore the name Cseleháza that means Trick House. According to another explanation, the village got its name from the crumbled Zeta castle.

Based on the latest census data, the population is 5,580, the majority of which are Roman Catholic.

 

Tourism

Zetea is a large, populous Szeklerland region rich in tourist attractions, cultural values, and traditional programs. The multitude of Szekler gates, the colorful folk costumes and the Szekler cuisine represent a significant tourist attraction, and it offers visitors a wide selection of its natural attractions.

 

In the Târnava Mare valley, on the western side of the Harghita Mountains, in the middle of Harghita County, it covers 19,000 hectares, half of which is forest.

 

Harghita Mădăraș, called the holy mountain of the Szeklers, can be reached most easily via Izvoare, along an asphalt road.

 

When visiting our village, you can admire the largest Roman Catholic church in the area. Other architectural sights: the Chapel of Our Blessed Lady in the cemetery, the oldest architectural monument in Zetea, some street sections preserving traditional folk architecture, and hundreds of Szekler gates.

 

Water lovers can take advantage of the fishing, swimming, and boating opportunities of the Zetea Reservoir, but there is also the possibility of riding horses in the Ivó Riding Hall, but if you want more adrenaline, you have go-karting, rafting, segway, mountain kart and other interesting adventures.

 

Those who want to hike can choose between different walking, horseback, cart and electric bicycle tours. Zete Castle, Zete Nature Trail, the 1801 m high Harghita Mădăraș are just a few of the many hiking opportunities.

 

Animal lovers can see and photograph deer, roe deer, mouflons and wild boars in their natural environment in the Ivói Vadaspark. You can also observe the bear in its natural environment from a safe ambush.
