Wood carving

The manufacture of ornaments

Making and decorating household objects through carving is specific to Hungarians from the Carpathian Basin.

In the Szeklerland, household and agricultural tools were often decorated with carved patterns. Considering the raw material, wood is the most suitable for carving, but stone, bone and  wooden rafters were also carved with the intention of creating objects and decoration.

In addition to the makers of Kopja – carved wooden memorial column and Székelykapu – the famous Szekler wooden gates, in every locality there are carvers blessed with incredible artistic talent, who besides decorating ordinary, everyday objects, are also involved in the production of decorative objects.
