Unlike tanners (tímárok) and curriers (vargák), furriers (szűcsök) deal with the preparation and processing of furs. While the furriers processed leather for its hair, the tanners and curriers removed it.
For this reason, vegetable tanning could not be used for leather finishing, although some technologies were adopted from related trades. The word "szűcs" - furrier, is of Bulgarian-Turkish origin and means "to sew". Even the founding letter of the Tihany Abbey mentions the szűcsök.
In the past, szűcs (now furrier) lined cloth garments. Later, they began to make clothing from leather, a much more precious material.
