The reservoir was established between 1978 and 1989 for the purpose of flood protection at the confluence of the Târnava Mare river and the Șicasău stream, above Sub Cetate. Nowadays, a small hydroelectric plant below the dam is diligently producing "clean" electricity.
The 50 m high and 520 m long valley closing dam stores 15 million cubic meters of water, which covers an area of about 140 hectares.
The Zetea Reservoir tames the rapid flow of wild waters down from the mountains and turns it into a wonderful artificial lake that offers excellent opportunities for fishing, bathing, hiking or boating.
The lake's water warms up nicely from late June to mid-August, it is also excellent for bathing. There are no built-in shore areas, so we recommend the lake for swimming only to our guests who are not scared if the ground suddenly runs out under their feet! The shore of the lake is mostly steep, so there is deep water near the shore. There are no eddies or obstacles in the lake.
The water of the lake is free of pollution, because trout also live in it. Anglers do not need a fishing license, but are required to purchase a day ticket available on site! (You can read more about fishing conditions here.)
The lake is surrounded by mountains, and although all kinds of big wild animals can be found in our forests (bear, lynx, wolf, wild boar, deer, roe deer, etc.), you can hike or walk through the forest with the greatest safety, because wild animals avoid the places visited by people!
