Water mills are typical, but increasingly disappearing, buildings of the architecture of Szeklerland. In the Izvoare village of the commune Zetea, 17 water mills once worked, but today only a few keep their memory. Not long time ago, thanks to the work of Larix Studio, a water saw was brought back to life. The ideas related to the design can be found in the suggestive writing of Miklós Köllő.
There is a communication gap between architects and non-architects. While architects in the Szeklerland, to the best of their knowledge, consider our (folk) heritage to be valuable and beloved, people here usually don't see the same in increasingly run-down buildings. In its original form, this heritage does not meet the needs of today's people, so it is disappearing at an alarming rate - as part of a process that breaks the organic connection between landscape, settlement, land structure and buildings that are characteristics of Szeklerland - so the region loses the chance to be classified as a cultural landscape.
At the same time, we must be aware that the Szeklerland - based on popular architectural traditions and technical knowledge of wooden architecture and infrastructure – can (could) develop a surprisingly contemporary and distinctive architecture.
